At Volkswagen of Mexico, we see sustainable development as an opportunity to focus our innovation skills on ensuring the long-term continuity of our company. It means creating greater value while using fewer resources. We look after the interests of our employees and are committed to maintaining long-term relationships with our distributors, suppliers, the community and our customers. Sustainability means continuous improvement of the technological aspects of our processes and our vehicles in ways that are beneficial to the environment and the consumer, always endeavoring to maintain our technological and quality-focused leadership in the automotive industry.

Social responsibility implies taking an active part in developing the communities around our plants in Puebla and Silao. In addition to creating well-paid jobs, Volkswagen of Mexico provides support for the development of cultural, educational and environmental protection activities – not to mention the philanthropic activities in which our employees are involved.

2015 Highlights

"From 2012 to 2015, Volkswagen of Mexico reduced waste generation by 99%. This means that almost all the waste generated in the factory is reused, reworked or recycled."

Equal Opportunities

Volkswagen of Mexico has a gender equity policy to ensure equal opportunities for women and men, applying specific measures to prevent, follow up and punish all forms of discrimination, harassment and violence.

Nature Conservation

In 2005, Volkswagen de México set up the Conservation Biology Research Award with annual prize money of 1 million Mexican pesos (approximately equivalent to €50,000) under the motto “for the love of the planet”. The aim of the environmental program is to promote research into biodiversity and nature conservation in Mexico. Each year, a research award of 500,000 Mexican (approximately equivalent to €25,000) pesos honors the outstanding work of an individual scientist. Every year, the same amount is awarded to key environmental protection projects which may run for several years.

In March 2008, Volkswagen de México launched another major nature conservation project. In cooperation with 39 suppliers and the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas, the company is supporting the reforestation of 600 hectares on the mountain range between Iztaccíhuatl and Popocatépetl, at an elevation of 3,600 meters.

490,000 conifers have now been planted and 47,000 soakaways constructed with the aim of capturing 4.12 million m3 of water per year to replenish the groundwater in the Puebla valley. This is significantly in excess of the volume of water used by Volkswagen’s Puebla plant, partner companies and the households of all program partners’ employees. The trees also stabilize the ecosystem, because the new biomass absorbs carbon dioxide and helps improve living conditions for indigenous species. To date, Volkswagen de México has invested more than €1,000,000 in this project.

A further reforestation project with the same goal was initiated near the new engine plant in Silao in the state of Guanajuato in 2011.

Waste Reduction

In 2012, several projects were rolled out with the aim of reducing the volume of industrial waste that requires special handling. The success of these projects can be seen in the 2015 year-end values, which show a 99% reduction compared with 2012.

In 2015 the following projects were worked on:

  • Devices for the classification and harvest of non-hazardous waste at the production point
  • Recycling of first-filling fluids in assembly lines
  • Recycling of moisture-absorbing materials

These improvements projects generate a saving total of 15.09 t/annum.
